PHOENIX, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Clair Orr, a member of the Colorado State Board of Education, is being awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE). The award is annually given to a state board of education member in recognition of outstanding service to public education.
"Clair Orr has helped improve Colorado's education system through his principled leadership and commitment to the best interests of the state's schoolchildren. For more than a decade, Clair has served on the state board where he helped develop and enact the testing and accountability system for which the state has earned a national reputation. As chairman of the state board during the Columbine tragedy, Clair Orr was a model of calm and compassionate leadership in trying times," said Brenda Welburn, NASBE Executive Director.
Clair Orr was elected in 1994 to represent Colorado's second largest congressional district in area, covering half of the northern and all of the eastern region of the state, making him the longest-serving member of the Colorado State Board of Education. Clair was elected in 1999 as chairman and served in that capacity during the tragedy at Columbine. His tireless efforts on behalf of Colorado's students over the past ten years have been very influential on a number of education issues, including implementing a standards-based accountability system, 13 statewide model content standards, the Colorado Student Assessment Program, accreditation, educator standards, and School Land Trust reform. Clair is a fourth generation rancher and a native of Colorado. He participated in many NASBE activities, including the Governmental Affairs Committee.
"The Distinguished Service Award recognizes the contributions of those who serve on state boards of education across the nation. In highlighting the achievements of these very special board members, we honor the dedication of those men and women who give tirelessly of their time and energy to make the critical policy decisions affecting the education of the more than fifty-three million students in America's public schools. We also reaffirm the ideal that one dedicated person can make a positive difference in the lives of thousands of young people," said Welburn.
The award is being presented at NASBE's national conference in Phoenix, Arizona on October 14.
